Welcome to Hi-Def DYI! I'm here to share my experiences on becoming your own "service provider". That means the TV, phone and internet bundle. My family still pays for monthly internet, but by setting up our own VOIP and using an antenna to get all the major North American television networks in HD, our total cost is just under $40/month.

I'll be writing a series of posts on how to tackle each of the big 3, starting with VOIP since it is something you can do with any internet connection and a relatively inexpensive VOIP box. Next will be TV, and you can do what we did, keep your current TV provider while experimenting with the amazingly high-def TV stations freely available in most major cities in North America. There is a lot of information already available on the web so my goal is to put all the most important stuff in one place so that anyone who doesn't mind tinkering and spending an hour or two a night can do it.
